Your military paycheck is more than base pay. Between BAH, BAS, allowances, and special pay, most service members earn meaningfully more than the pay chart alone suggests — and knowing your real number matters for budgeting, PCS planning, and re-enlistment decisions. This guide explains how 2026 military pay is built and how to estimate yours in seconds.

How 2026 military base pay is calculated

Base pay is determined by two things:

  • Pay grade — E-1 through E-9 for enlisted, W-1 through W-5 for warrant officers, and O-1 through O-10 for officers.
  • Years of service — pay increases at set longevity milestones (over 2, over 3, over 4, over 6, and so on).

Congress adjusts military pay annually through the defense authorization process, and new pay tables generally take effect on January 1. The official 2026 tables are published by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS).

What else counts toward your paycheck

BAH — Basic Allowance for Housing

If you live off base, BAH is often the largest addition to your pay. It's based on your duty station ZIP code, pay grade, and whether you have dependents, and it is generally not taxable. See our BAH calculator by ZIP code guide for details.

BAS — Basic Allowance for Subsistence

BAS offsets the cost of meals. It's a flat monthly rate that differs for enlisted members and officers, updated annually, and generally not taxable.

Special and incentive pays

Depending on your job and orders, you may also receive special pays such as flight pay, dive pay, sea pay, hazardous duty pay, or a reenlistment bonus. These vary widely, so estimates should include only pays you actually receive.

Frequently asked questions

When does the 2026 military pay raise take effect?

Pay tables are updated annually, with new rates generally effective January 1. The exact 2026 raise is set through the annual defense authorization process — check DFAS for the official tables.

Is BAH included in base pay?

No. BAH is a separate allowance based on ZIP code, pay grade, and dependency status — and unlike base pay, it is generally not taxable.

Is military base pay taxable?

Base pay is generally subject to federal income tax; allowances such as BAH and BAS generally are not. Pay earned in a designated combat zone may be excluded. Consult a tax professional for your situation.
