If you have more than one VA disability rating, your combined rating is almost never what simple addition suggests. The VA uses a "whole-person" method that surprises most veterans the first time they see it. This guide explains exactly how VA math works, how dependents affect compensation, and how to estimate your 2026 monthly payment.

How VA math actually works

The VA starts from the idea that a person can't be more than 100% disabled. Each rating is applied to the remaining non-disabled portion, from the highest rating down:

  1. Start with your highest rating — say 50%. You are now 50% disabled, with 50% "remaining."
  2. Apply the next rating — say 30% — to the remaining 50%. That adds 15% (30% of 50%), for a combined 65%.
  3. Repeat for each additional rating, always against what remains.
  4. Round the final number to the nearest 10% — 65% rounds to a combined rating of 70%.

Example: 50% + 30% is a combined 65%, which rounds to 70% — not 80%. This is why adding new ratings raises your combined rating less and less as it climbs.

The official combined ratings table is published in the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (38 CFR Part 4).

From rating to 2026 compensation

Your combined rating maps to a monthly tax-free compensation amount in the VA rate tables, updated annually with the COLA adjustment. Two things can raise the payment further:

  • Dependents — at a combined rating of 30% or higher, eligible dependents (spouse, children, dependent parents) add to the monthly amount.
  • Special circumstances — such as Aid and Attendance or SMC, which follow separate rules.

Current official rates are at VA.gov — Veterans disability compensation rates.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't 50% + 30% equal 80%?

Because each rating applies only to the remaining non-disabled portion. 50% + 30% combines to 65%, which rounds to 70%.

Do dependents increase VA compensation?

Yes — at a combined rating of 30% or higher, eligible dependents add to the monthly amount per the VA rate tables.

Is a calculator result the same as a VA decision?

No. Calculators estimate what a set of ratings could mean; only the VA makes determinations.
